Artist Statement
After concentrating on abstract works,
I’ve begun exploring how combining representational (depth of field,
narrative) and abstract elements (planes, colors, shapes) creates
greater visual depths and meanings within a compacted space.
Plug
Series #1 (20 mixed
media, photo transfer collages)
A collage series
celebrating industry and mechanical objects. I purposely kept the collages small
(each approximately 9” x 11”, unframed) in order to present the collages on an
intimate scale.
Decommissioned (single, mixed media, photo transfer
collage for Art Contemplates Industry: Bull Run Exhibit)
A whimsical collage combining
narratives of the mothballed power plant (returning the river to salmons) and
our forgotten debt for a lifestyle we take for granted.
Plug
Series #2 (in
progress)
Continuing the first
plug series only this time within a narrative framework. This series reminds us of the
engineers who take abstract ideas and make them into a physical presence.
Boxed
Set Series (in
progress, 20+ completed mixed media collages on museum board or canvas from 32”
x 40” to 40” x 64”)
The title of the first and last in the
continuing series, “When Doors and Boxes Open”, presents the theme that when
doors, boxes, or minds open gifts or doomsday and destruction can result. The
circular nature of the series begins and ends with the first in the series and
continues with abstracts based on creation myths and biblical stories.
